For example

For example, when we meet Holden at the beginning of the novel, he describes his physical appearance and says; ‘I’m six foot two and a half and I have gray hair. I really do… millions of gray hairs.’ This is an incredibly unusual way for a seventeen year old to describe themselves and the use of repetition in this situation emphasises a sense of desperation and since we learn later on that Holden is, in his own words, ‘the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life’, it is quite possible that this description of his hair is actually false and representative of his desire to be seen as older than he actually is by the reader.
