Information Systems Integration Project: Part 1
Information Systems Integration
Technology has played an important role in the healthcare industry by enabling healthcare organizations to improve the effectiveness of the current healthcare processes. This has enabled healthcare facilities to address the rising demand of healthcare and more complex needs in the healthcare industry (Glandon, Smaltz, & Slovensky, 2014). Due to the nature of healthcare information, which is complex and time oriented, healthcare professionals should be able to understand this aspect of health care and the integration of technology into the healthcare system (Glandon, Smaltz, & Slovensky, 2014). In the process of integrating technology in healthcare, there are some challenges, which are experienced which may affect the effectiveness and successful integration of health information technology. Healthcare professionals should be aware of these challenges, which will enable the healthcare professionals to address the challenges to ensure that an organization fully adopts information technology due to the benefits associated with this process (Glandon, Smaltz, & Slovensky, 2014).
Describe the Type of Health Care Organization and the Role of the IT Professional That You Interviewed
I had the chance to interview John, who is a healthcare IT professional who works at a primary healthcare setting where he was able to share information related to the integration of technology in the healthcare setting. Information collected indicates many changes experienced due to the integration of technology in the facility (Weaver et al., 2016). In a primary care practice, healthcare practitioners are responsible for providing health care to all individuals, promoting health through disease prevention and engaging the community in health programs. The healthcare practitioners are able to achieve these objectives by using healthcare technology (Weaver et al., 2016). It is important to apply technology in primary health care to replace the traditional practices, which include diagnosis and patient management systems.
The IT professional in a primary health care setting has the roles of ensuring that the organization integrates the use of technology in different aspects of the healthcare setting (Weaver et al., 2016). This includes the use of technology to improve the decision-making process using computerized measurements, which are able to give results that are more accurate. Another role of the IT professional in a primary healthcare setting is improving network connectivity, which is having connections within the organization as well as between different organizations (Weaver et al., 2016). Networking is very important in a healthcare setting by helping all individuals involved to share important information, which helps in making informed decisions. This process can also help healthcare professionals to be able to monitor patients while still at home with implemented systems, which improve communication between the healthcare professionals and the patients regardless of the distance (Weaver et al., 2016).
Explain What HMIS Means To the Individual and Provide a Summary of the Interview Discussion
The thoughts on the Health Management Information System (HMIS) by the IT professional were all about the improvement of the health care services and saving on cost of health care services (Sicilia & Balazota, 2013). The IT professional’s view on HMIS was that this is meant to ensure that healthcare processes are running smoothly which will have a positive impact on the healthcare providers as well as the individuals who are accessing the health care services (Sicilia ; Balazota, 2013). John, who is the IT professional has been working in this position for twelve years and has experienced many changes in the primary care all attributed to the integration of health technology in the facility. HMIS has brought very diverse and complex changes in primary care, which includes health promotion, disease prevention, and the delivery of healthcare services in the facility (Sicilia ; Balazota, 2013).
The IT professional also explains the improved patient outcomes, which have been attributed to the implementation of health management information system (Sicilia ; Balazota, 2013). A summary of the interview discussion indicates the impact HMIS has on the healthcare organization especially in primary care. Through the interview with John, it is evident how HMIS has played an important role in record keeping and tracking of information in the healthcare organization (Sicilia ; Balazota, 2013). Healthcare practitioners are able to access information relating to patients and the determination of strategies, which are best, suited for the patients. This has led to the improvement on the quality of healthcare services in the organization with John indicating an increase in the number of patients that the healthcare organization is able to provide services to in a given day (Sicilia ; Balazota, 2013).
Discuss the Importance of HMIS both Within and Across Health Care Organizations Using Examples from the Interview That You Conducted
The HMIS has enabled better planning and improved decision-making process in the healthcare setting with an improved information flow process, evaluation measure of processes, and data processing (Weaver et al., 2016). The system is also able to track different dimensions of the quality of healthcare services, which is done by comparing services delivered with the expected performance. Patient education has also been improved due to the integration of HMIS, which has been attributed to the improved communication process where the patients are able to communicate with healthcare practitioners (Weaver et al., 2016). This has also led to accurate follow-ups on patients, which has led to improved patient outcomes with the patients also able to provide feedback related to the quality of services that they receive. Patient education is very important in helping individuals to improve their health through the implementation of current and evidence-based strategies (Weaver et al., 2016).
Patient education also plays an important role in enabling healthcare facilities in achieving their goals and objectives. With the integration of HMIS in the healthcare system, the healthcare system is able to perform to its full potential and any delays and system crashes can be fixed (Glandon, Smaltz, ; Slovensky, 2014). The HMIS has improved the coordination process, strategic management, and the development of healthcare systems, which are very important in the provision of important primary care services (Glandon, Smaltz, ; Slovensky, 2014). HMIS is also important in improving networking between different healthcare organizations, which is important in sharing useful information between the organizations. Information is very important and has an impact on the service delivery in healthcare organizations, which can be facilitated by the integration of HMIS into a healthcare system (Glandon, Smaltz, ; Slovensky, 2014).
Describe the Cost, Time, and Delivery of Quality Services Associated With an HMIS
HMIS impacts different important aspects of the healthcare service delivery which include cost, time, and the quality of services in an organization. HMIS has been indicated to have a direct link to the productivity in the healthcare sector which is attributed to the ability of the system to transform processes and service delivery through innovation (Agha, 2014). Due to the increase in medical errors associated with the delivery of healthcare services, the integration of HMIS in healthcare facilities has led to a reduction of these errors improving the quality of healthcare services (Agha, 2014). The HMIS is also attributed to the reduction of costs in accessing healthcare services. Most of the earlier systems of healthcare involved many complex processes, which were costly in accessing and processing information (Agha, 2014). However, with the integration of HMIS in the healthcare sector, there are more cost-efficient processes, which are an advantage to the healthcare facility (Agha, 2014).
An HMIS allows healthcare organizations to be able to invest on effective processes, which have a positive impact on the cost of funding certain processes. With the reduction on human error and inefficient processes, an organization is able to save resources, which can be diverted into other uses (Agha, 2014). HMIS is also important in saving the time factor with the system improving the effectiveness of certain processes, which previously consumed a lot of the time resource. HMIS enables an organization to streamline its operations and processes through the automation of the processes, which improves the access of medical records and addressing emergencies in a healthcare organization (Agha, 2014). This improves the effectiveness of the healthcare practices leading to improved quality of services provided by the organization.
