Ron, nice informative post! I agree that cultural competence begins before schooling. Most of us have learned at a young age how cultures can be diverse and to be accepting of others. Now as a nurse, we can implement our knowledge into our practices. I’m glad to read that you enjoy learning about other cultures as much as I do. Being able to adjust to others’ beliefs so effortlessly will help provide your patient with the best possible care. Additionally, in my research I found that educational simulations have been held to teach health care workers about other cultures and their beliefs without inflicting any harm to real-life patients; positive feedback was given by the attendees to provide more empathetic care to their patients (Drevdahl, 2018). Hopefully in the future, we could have some type of culture-related simulation available locally, since we have many different cultures mixed together in this area.
