sDEFINITION OF SECURITY
The term security is multidimensional and complex connotation which is co-existed since human civilisation came into being. There is no perennial or universal definition of security to satisfy every age and phase. The meaning of the term security sometimes regarded as ambiguous word because it expands each and every day. The following are the some of the definitions of the word security: absence of threats, economic, registration process, environment, security is taken to be about the pursuit of freedom from threat and the ability of states and societies to maintain their independent identity and their functional integrity against forces, and extent to which computer system is protected.
Firstly, security is defined as absence of threats. (Ken Booth. The theory of world security). According to his definition, the threats can be the hunger, wars, political instability, religious affiliation etc. The absence of these threats may results into people enjoying their rights and feel confidence hence contribute to the national development. For instance, in Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia people are not settled due to the wars that threatens them each and every day.
Secondly, the term security is also defined as economic. The condition of having stable income or other resources to support a standard of living now and in the foreseeable future is what is known as economic security. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia). This concept focuses on predictability of the future cash flow of a person or other economic entity such as a country. In addition to this, the meaning is also looking at employment level in the country that satisfies all people. The broader effect of society’s production levels and monetary support for non-working citizens may also be the part of this definition
However, security is also defined as registration process. Bearing the name of the holder and other necessary details maintained in register by the issuer (http//www.investopedia.com 2018).when registering individuals in a an organisation , academic institution, political institution and in any other institution the motive behind is to make sure that there is security so that no any outsiders can venture into the system . The concept also looks the issue of originality of individuals as far as security is concerned so that no any stranger should be registered. For example terrorists that attacks in many parts of the world, uses information found in computers.
Fourthly, the security is defined as environment. The environmental security is central to national security, compromising the dynamics and interconnections among the natural resource base. According to the concept given above, it tries to enlighten that environmental security is globes life –supporting eco-systems that generate water, food, medicine, and clean air. This concept helps to understand national security and politics that if not taken seriously may lead into conflict, including violent conflict. For instance, the practicing of mining the minerals and exploiting oil can cause environmental degradation through pollution like climate change which may affect people in different ways of life. The definition is also make an emphasis that if environment is scarce, people may scramble for the available resources which is also the issue of nation concern and security may take its course.
Fifthly, the security is taken to be about the pursuit of freedom from threat and the ability of states and societies to maintain their independent identity and their functional integrity against forces (comprehensive security analysis, new patterns of global security twenty first century). This site identifies threats as significant enough to warrant emergency action and exceptional measures including the use of force. This definition makes it clear that state should take its support and safeguard its people in as far as national security is concerned. For instance, the war in Iraq can be considered an illustration of why we need new approach to security.in most cases wherever there is wars, the states gradually able to monopolize organised violence and eliminate private armies, brigands, etc. and establish professional force to the state.
Last but not least, the security is also defined as the extent to which a computer system is protected from data, corruption, destruction, interception, loss or unauthorised access (business dictionary.com). This means that computers can be affected by different surroundings like viruses.Anti-viruses are some of the ways established to withstand viruses that can destruct some of the important information in the system. A good example for this, is that if viruses interferes computer system, the information becomes unsupported of which the information might be of the nation interest. Putting passwords can also be the other way how to safeguard computers from some intruders that access the information and use as loop hole to invade the state.
In conclusion, the word security can be defined in different ways according to the current situation that needs security.
