The actions of a leader has a major impact on the organizational ethics in a culture. Leaders act as a lever in an ethical system designed to conduct ethical behavior. Leadership provides power and strength to influence the followers to act in a certain manner. Therefore, if a leader is ethical in relations, it is prone to impact the actions, processes and ethical conducts of the employees and foster an ethical culture within an organization (James Downe, 2016). James Burke displayed great ethic values which were also reflected by the employees of the company.

The best known examples of a visible ethical leader is James Burke who was a former CEO of Johnson and Johnson (Linda K. Trevino, 2010). James Burke was appointed the CEO of the company in the late 70s. After becoming the CEO, he challenged the credo of the company. He stated that the credo has become an irrelevant subject and needs to be revisited and updated. However, after much effort, debates, and disagreements, the credo was finally revised. The commitment to the customers was intact and their priority was made foremost. The credo helped the company in the decision making process during the Tylenol crisis in 1982. Additionally, a credo survey process was initiated by Burke which allowed the employees to present views regarding the credo. Burke proved his commitment and allegiance to the values represented by the credo of the company. The case of James Burke showed that the leader behavior towards ethic code of a company is very important in the ethic culture of an organization. A leader’s attitude towards the ethic code greatly determines the attitude of the whole organization.
The morality of a leader places a huge influence on the ethical conduct of the organization. The private morality of the leader provides an extension for the public morality. James burke was viewed as generally caring towards his employees and organization. Great character and strong values is distinctively characteristic merits of a quality leader. A bad person, however, is unscrupulous having little to no regards to other human beings under his command. On the other hand, a bad person realizing the improvements needed in his character and open to new challenges may prove to be an excellent leader.
