Translation has been discredited as a consequence of its use in the grammar translation method. Method that was really popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and which main objectives were the mastery of grammar rules and the accuracy of the L2 through the use of translation. Taking into account that it was a long time of the same and learners only acquired grammatical competence due to the lack of practice and development of skills such speaking and listening in the process and the learners’ exposure to an artificial use of the language, communicative competence or active communication in the L2 was not accomplished. Therefore, it could be said that a significant number of teachers and scholars relate translation to that kind of results and do not see it as a possible strategy that can contribute positively to the language learning and teaching process. Instead, they see it as a technique that hinders that process. Nevertheless, it is a controversy that will not have an end since there has always been and will always be advocates and well supported reasons for its use and non-use.
